to
Koh Chang, Koh Mak, Koh Kood
|

Trat town is
around 290 km east of Bangkok and 90 km west of the Cambodia
border, where the Had Lek / Koh Kong border crossing is handy
for travellers reaching the coast and islands of either country.
Frequent buses and minibuses run east to the border and west to
Chanthaburi and Bangkok, and the town is a transit point for the
islands of Ko Chang, Ko Mak and Ko Kut. |

Air
Trat’s tiny airport is located 30 kilometres west of town, serviced only
by a couple of daily flights to/from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport with
Bangkok Airways. We’ve never used this airport; locals told us that
minibus tickets to Trat town cost a whopping 500 baht per person.
Private taxis are also available.

Boat
Songthaews wait at the bus station in Trat to shuttle passengers
straight to the ferry piers for Ko Chang, Ko Mak and Ko Kut. The price
tends to be 80-baht per person (a bit more for Ko Kut) if the truck is
full, but the rate jumps if only a few heads are going. |

To Ko Chang Two
year-round car ferries (Koh Chang Ferry and Centerpoint Ferry) each use
a different pier in Laem Ngop, less than 30 kilometres southwest of Trat
town. They both depart every 45 minutes from 06:00 to 19:00 for 80 baht
per person, plus 80 to 100 baht if bringing a car. Songthaews from Trat
town often stop at a travel office near the piers; you can buy tickets
there or wait until you arrive at the pier—the price is the same either
way. From Ko Chang the ferries return in the same timeframe and
songthaews await passengers heading to Trat. The ride to Ko Chang takes
around 45 minutes
